Lena Horne
A legend that I had the pleasure of meeting continues to shine. Here is my sketch of her for Playbill when she did "A Lady and Her Music" on Broadway.
It is a sad day indeed for both musicians (who may have worked with her, appreciated her talent) and music lovers (who DEFINITELY appreciated her talent!!), with Ms. Horne's passing. In life, you will always meet/hear about a few individuals who were truly blessed by the gods, looks, talent, charisma, taste, integrity... and she was one of these. Like the day when Luciano Pavarotti passed (which for me was a very sad day indeed!), I sent a prayer to the universe with my thanks for sending her to our world. She will always be remembered.... and you definitely captured her aura, my dear, in your lovely sketch

Wonderful tribute to the fabulous Ms Horne....I will reach out to her daughter Gail when things quiet down as she's an old friend...Another legend has gone but what memories she leaves us...b

I met her at Anne Klein many years ago when she came up to buy clothes.She was really nice and still gorgeous as a senior citizen.What a class act! I can't wait for the movie.

GT, thanks for sending that out, it definitely brings back memories for me. Particularly when I was dating Burke. As you might not know,Ms. Lena Horne was his first cousin. His father and her father were brothers. She will be sorely missed.e
Thanks for sending the sketch. Another icon passed, very sad. She had tremendous struggles in her life and career, I was always a huge fan of her and her music. Jeff.
You truly captured her essence here. She always seemed the perfect combination of vulnerabilty and the kind of strength that isn't threatening to men. And she had one of those rare faces that almost everyone finds beautiful.
I saw that show when she came to Louisville. She was the definition of a class act and I've always felt honored to have witnessed her in action.
Glenn Tunstull did a sketch of Miss Horne for PlayBill during her Broadway show in the late 80's.Her death just as her life is being felt deeply by the Black American community,and all those connoiseurs around the world who have an appreciation for talent ,courage and great beauty,she made her mark!!
Her life mattered to so many people and for so many good reasons. She has always had, and will always have my utmost respect and admiration for the outstanding contributions she made to the continuum span of American and world culture through her gift of voice.Indeed she was a pioneer in so many ways.
Another legend who set A standard...of race, beauty, femaleness, talent, performance and showmenship....and lived such a FLUID, creamy, smooth life, in spite of all the perceptions and drama. But then again.... there's a potential "legend" being born this split SECOND...somewhere in this huge world of 21 century possibilities and beyond....!LOL WOW...and on it goes...
I had the pleasure of designing and making a fabulous two piece dress ensemble for Lena Horn's musical director, Linda Twine. Ms. Horn loved my piece and complemented me on my superb designing ability. I inserted gussets under the arms giving Ms. Twine the freedom to move her arms while conducting the orchestra, Ms. Twine wore this stage ensemble for their tour in Europe " A Lady and Her Music" ... What a honor for me ... I have always loved, admired and respected Ms. Lena Horne, a true role model for so many years. She had timeless beauty ... she was fabulous in her youth and even more stately and beautiful in golden years.
